A Review of tbe Literature on tbe Gaseous Products and Toxicity Generated from the Pyrolysis and Combustion of Rigid Polyurethane Foams*

چکیده
The literature on rigid polyurethane foam has been reviewed with an emphasis on the gaseous products generated under various thermal decomposition conditions and the toxicity of those products. This review is limited to publications in English through 1984. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) were the predominant toxicants found among more than a hundred other gaseous products. The generation of CO and HCN was found to increase with increasing combustion temperatures. Many test methods were used to assess the acute inhalation toxicity of combustion products from various rigid polyurethane foams:. Lethality, incapacitation, physiological and biochemical parameters were employed as biological end points. In general, the combustion products generated from rigid polyurethane foam in the flaming mode appear to be more toxic than those produced in the non-tlaming mode. The LCso vaIuesfor 3O-min exposures ranged from 10to 17mgl-1 in the tlaming mode and weregreaterthen34mgl-1 in the non-flaming mode. With the exception of one case, in which a reactive type phosphorus containing fire retardant was used, the addition of fire retardants to rigid polyurethane foams does not appear to generate unusual toxic combustion products.

Bone-Borne Maxillary Expansion and Traditional Rapid Maxillary Expansion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Introduction: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effect of bone-borne expansion (BBE) and tooth-borne expansion (TBE) in patients with maxillary constriction. Methods: Electronic databases, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, were searched up to February 2019. Elig...
متن کاملEffect of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption of polyurethane foams
In this paper the influence of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption coefficient of polyurethane foams as a porous medium is investigated. Biot’s equations with transfer matrix method, as the solution approach are employed to evaluate the sound absorption coefficient of selected polyurethane foams. The major issue is the dependency of non-acoustic properties on each other which makes ...

متن کاملBio-Based Rigid Polyurethane Foam from Liquefied Products of Wood in the Presence of Polyhydric Alcohols
Rigid polyurethane foams were prepared from the liquefied wood polyols, which was obtained by the liquefaction of southern pine wood in the presence of polyhydric alcohols with sulfuric acid catalyst by using microwave-assistant as an energy source. The properties of liquefied biomass-based polyols and the rigid polyurethane foams were investigated. The results indicated that the foams exhibite...
متن کاملToxicity of combustion products from burning polymers: development and evaluation of methods
Laboratory and room-scale experiments were conducted with natural and synthetic polymers: cotton, paper, wood, wool, acetate, acrylic, nylon, and urethane. Smoke and off-gases from single materials were generated in a dual-compartment 110-liter exposure chamber. Multicomponent, composite fuel loads were burned within a 100 m(3) facility subdivided into rooms. In chamber experiments, mortality d...
